About Your Detroit Living

Your Detroit Living is a practical guide for people renting, buying or settling in Detroit: what to check before you sign a lease, how Land Bank houses and down payment help work, and what the city’s taxes, water bills, buses and winters mean for a household budget.

Every guide is built from what the responsible bodies publish themselves: the City of Detroit’s departments, the Detroit Land Bank Authority, the Water and Sewerage Department, DDOT, the Michigan Department of Treasury, the Michigan Judicial Institute’s landlord-tenant benchbook, the U.S. Census Bureau and NOAA.

We do not name or recommend landlords, agents, lenders or contractors, and we do not take payment from them. The Move-in dashboard on this site runs in your browser and only applies the deposit cap and city income tax rates described in the guides.

Programs, deadlines and rates change. Before you sign, apply or file, check the office or program named in each guide.
